A major gas explosion tore apart an iconic hotel in central Havana on Friday, killing at least nine people, injuring dozens more and destroying much of the building, according to the Cuban government.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said in a tweet that nine people were killed and more than 40 were injured and being treated at local hospitals. The president and other high-ranking officials rushed to the scene. The children from the nearby school are unharmed, the government said.
