COVID-19 in Quebec: What you need to know on Friday

  • On Friday, Quebec reported 2,051 people in hospital (down 68 from the previous day), including 60 in intensive care (down four from the previous day).
  • The province reported 1,243 new COVID-19 cases and 22 deaths.
  • Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 1,050,112 confirmed cases and 15,106 people have died.
  • The province also reported 7,337 health workers absent for COVID-related reasons.
  • 91 per cent of the eligible population in the province (aged five and over) received at least one dose of the vaccine; 54% received a third dose and 11% received a fourth dose.

* The new cases are those reported only to the Quebec government. They are considered to be underrepresented in the spread of the virus, given the limited availability of PCR tests and the use of home test kits.

* The Quebec Ministry of Health no longer reports data on COVID-19 over the weekend.

Meetings for the 4th dose for 18+ are already open

All Quebecers over the age of 18 are now eligible for a fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

The provincial health ministry tweeted the news yesterday, saying the meetings are now available on the Clic-Santé hour reservation platform.

The Quebec Immunization Committee (CIQ) has not made an official recommendation for the age group, but the ministry said it is opening meetings for those who would like a fourth dose. There are no known negative effects of receiving one, the ministry tweeted.

Currently, only 54% of the population aged five and over has received a third dose of the vaccine, according to provincial health data.

At a news conference Wednesday, Quebec’s interim director of public health, Dr Luc Boylo, said the province was preparing for a potential mass vaccination campaign in the autumn.

The mandate for the mask will be revoked on May 14

As of May 14, Quebec residents will no longer be required to wear masks in most public places indoors.

Boalo said it was a good time to get rid of the mandate of the mask, pointing to the declining trend in hospitalizations with COVID-19 and the number of health workers absent due to the coronavirus.

He issued a recommendation to remove the masks, which the Quebec government has since adopted.

Wearing a mask will still be mandatory in healthcare facilities and public transport.
