Elections in NI 2022: Results on Friday night and what happens next

This has been a dramatic day for our political parties in Northern Ireland, as the election results have come as a few surprises so far.

The census has stopped for the night, so we present the latest on who has been elected so far and what this means for the political landscape in Northern Ireland.

With 90 seats in 18 constituencies to be seized, 47 seats were secured on Friday night – half. Four constituencies have completed their counting – Nuri and Arma, East Antrim, South Antrim and Lagan Valley. The remaining counts will continue from 9 a.m. tomorrow.

Sinn Féin is on track for a historic victory in the Northern Ireland parliamentary elections, after receiving the most votes for the first preference.

Taking into account the 90 seats in Stormont, which are due to continue on Saturday, the Republican Party won 18 seats, well ahead of the DUP at 12, the Alliance at eight, the Ulster Unionists at four and the SDLP at three.

Jim Alistair returned to North Antrim for TUV and Alex Easton secured his place in North Down as an independent after leaving the DUP.

Sinn Fein looks set to come out with the most seats after receiving 250,388 first preferences, compared to 184,002 for the DUP and 116,681 for the Alliance.

This means that he received 29% of the votes for first preferences, compared to 21.3% for DUP, 13.5% for Alliance, 11.2% for Ulster Unionists and 9.1% for SDLP.

Naomi Long’s Alliance Party appears to be the second major winner of the election, with a surge of support for a community-based party that is likely to make it the third largest in Stormont, ahead of the UUP and SDLP, which have disappointing results.
