Jennifer Gray looked back on the devastating car accident she suffered with Matthew Broderick in a new interview with ET shared on Thursday.
The 62-year-old Dirty Dancing star talks about the clash that took place on August 5, 1987 in Northern Ireland, while promoting his new book Out Of The Corner: A Memoir.
“The car crash in Ireland was, I would say, the three biggest injuries of my life, perhaps the first,” the actress said, acknowledging that she still haunts her to this day.
Bad days: Jennifer Gray called Matthew Broderick’s 1987 car crash – which killed two women in Northern Ireland – “the three biggest injuries of my life” in an interview with ET on Thursday; seen together in 1987
“It’s very difficult to describe when you have a near-death experience and witness the deaths of others,” Jennifer continued. “Being alone on a country road in the middle of nowhere with no one else around or conscious was pretty horrifying … It led to so many other things in my life.”
She and Matthew were on holiday in Northern Ireland after starting a secret relationship during the filming of their hit comedy “Ferris Buhler’s Day Off”, which came out in 1986.
Matthew was behind the wheel of a BMW they had rented when he crossed the middle line and crashed into a car driven by 63-year-old Margaret Doherty and her 28-year-old daughter, Anna Gallagher.
Both women died instantly in the crash, and Matthew was unconscious with serious injuries.
Devastating: They were renting a car in Northern Ireland when Matthew drove over the center line and hit the other car. The two women in it were killed and he was seriously wounded and unconscious
Terrifying: “I was the only living witness because Matthew had survived but was unconscious, had amnesia and was very badly injured. I thought he was dead, “she said. seen in 1987
Jennifer found the incident particularly traumatic, as she was the only person left alive and conscious after the crash while alone on the road.
“I was the only living witness because Matthew had survived but was unconscious, had amnesia and was very badly injured. I thought he was dead, “she said with growing emotion in her voice.” I didn’t even know there were two other women who were tragically killed at the time. It’s just something you just don’t come back the same way.
The crash has haunted Broderick for years and some fans are spreading rumors about the cause, but Gray says there is nothing sinister in the events that led to the crash.
“I didn’t have the information that people seem to think I have because they wanted an answer and there was no answer because it was an accident,” she said. ‘And [Matthew] he was a great driver and no one drank. It was just an accident. And it was tragic and I think about the family in Ireland all the time.

She and Broderick, who were engaged during the filming of Ferris Buhler, will separate soon after the 1988 incident.
Broderick later married Sarah Jessica Parker in 1997, and Gray was married to actor Clark Greg from 2001 to 2021.
After a brief romance with Broderick, Gray recovered with another relationship with Johnny Depp on the A list.
Continuation: After his brief romance with Broderick, Gray recovers from another A-list relationship with Johnny Depp, although she has accused him of being “crazy jealous and paranoid” in his memoirs; seen in 1989
“We were young … For me, this man was the answer to my problems. This man was sweet, loving, romantic, crazy about me and beautiful. I desperately needed to go back to something that looked and felt like Johnny Depp from 1989, “she said. “Believe me, it was a very soft landing. It was necessary. I was bleeding inside and this man saved me and just made me … not feel what I feel.
But Jennifer also accused her ex-lover of being “crazy, jealous and paranoid” in her memoirs.
“All I can say about this process is that it breaks my heart for everyone involved,” Gray said of Depp’s ongoing defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife, Amber Heard. “I just think it’s sad and I want it to be allowed and I just wish everyone well.
