Two men and a woman died at the resort, and a fourth American woman was airlifted to a hospital in Nassau, the Bahamas’ capital, Bahamas Acting Prime Minister Chester Cooper said on Friday.
Although police are investigating, Cooper has been “advised not to suspect unfair play,” he said.
Cooper did not name the resort. But Sandals Resorts, operators of more than a dozen all-inclusive centers in the Atlantic and Caribbean, said three guests died Friday at the Sandals Emerald Bay resort of Great Exuma.
The sandals do not mention a fourth hospitalized person. Details of what led to the death, why the fourth American was taken to the hospital, whether this person was at the resort, the condition of this person and the names of the Americans are not reported.
“Initially, an emergency medical situation was reported and following our protocols, we immediately alerted emergency medical professionals and relevant local authorities,” Sandals Resorts said in a statement to CNN on Saturday morning.
The company said it was working to “support both the investigation and the families of the guests in every way possible”, but could not disclose additional information “out of respect for the privacy of our guests”.
Cooper asked the National Secretary of Health and Wellness to lead a delegation of health, environment and public affairs officials in the Exuma area on Friday.
“The public will be informed as soon as it becomes available,” said Cooper, who is also Bahamas’ tourism minister. “We offer our thoughts and prayers to the affected families.”
