The escape vehicle used by a man wanted for murder in Alabama and a prison officer suspected of helping him escape after a “prison romance” were found at a Tennessee detention center where he had been for nearly a week before authorities to find out they own it, officials said Friday.
Shepherd Rick Singleton of Lauderdale County, Alabama, told a news conference that a distinctive burnt orange Ford Edge was found at the side of the road and towed the same day Casey White, accused of murder, and former Assistant Director of Corrections Vicki White went missing. The vehicle was found in a rural area near Interstate 65, about 100 miles (about 160 kilometers) from a prison in Florence, Alabama.
Authorities in Williamson County, Tennessee, learned they had the vehicle Thursday night, hours after U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said the two unrelated were considered “extremely dangerous” and the Marshall Service. The United States took over. leading demand.
Officials said they hoped Casey White’s size – 6 feet 9 and 340 pounds – would help capture him, as it is difficult for him to go unnoticed. He also has recognizable tattoos of white supremacy. He and Vicki White appear to have had a “prison affair” before his escape, Singleton said.
“They found the car before we even knew they weren’t there,” Singleton said. Some of Vicki White’s belongings were found in a vehicle that someone tried to spray paint on, he said.
The driver of the truck that towed the vehicle probably saw news of the escape and notified Tennessee police, Singleton said.
“There is no guilt or guilt on anyone,” he said.
The Williamson County Sheriff said the vehicle was found in Bethesda and there were no indications that the two remained in the area.
A national search has been ongoing since the two disappeared on April 29th. Casey White was awaiting trial for murder, and Vicki White was assistant director of correction at Lauderdale County. She seems to have helped him plan and carry out the escape, Singleton said.
Authorities are now trying to establish whether there were reports of missing vehicles in the area where the car was found, he said.
“We’re going back to the beginning with a description of the vehicle,” Singleton said, adding at one point, “We’re back to where we’d like to be.”
The two probably had mechanical problems with the car and left it where it was found in a remote area, Singleton said. The sheriff said he was worried about his ex-employee’s safety because Casey White was “unstable” and could face her at any time.
No weapons were found in the car, indicating the two are still armed, Singleton said. “My blackness tells me they’re obviously on the run,” he said.
On the day the couple went missing, 56-year-old Vicki White told colleagues that the 38-year-old prisoner should go to court to have his mental health assessed. She escorted the prisoner herself, in violation of the sheriff’s office’s policy. When she did not answer her phone or return in the afternoon, authorities learned the couple had disappeared. Authorities eventually learned that the evaluation was never scheduled and was just a charade that allowed Vicki White to get Casey White out of jail without suspicion.
The two set off in a patrol car, which was found abandoned near a parking lot where investigators said Vicki White had parked an escape car.
Authorities learned last week that Vicki White had purchased a number of weapons, including an AR-15 rifle in January and a rifle two weeks before the escape. They also believe she has a 9mm pistol with her and have received reports that she may also have a .45 caliber pistol, a federal marshal said.
Federal investigators say they have planned to flee for at least a few months. The marshals’ office and the sheriff’s office interviewed a number of associates, family members and others who knew both Casey White and Vicki White and received a wealth of advice in the investigation. But despite all their efforts, investigators have not come up with any solid clues to find them.
The Marshall Service is offering a $ 10,000 reward for information leading to the capture of Casey White and a $ 5,000 reward for information leading to Vicki White. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey added a $ 5,000 prize to each.
“Both Casey White and Vicki White pose a major threat to society and they must be detained,” she said in a statement.
Casey White has been jailed on charges of murdering Connie Ridgeway in 2015. He pleaded guilty to murder in 2020 while in state prison for other crimes. He has been linked to home raids, car thefts and has also been involved in police harassment, Keeley said.
