Victoria’s driver faces charges

Victoria police said the driver was identified and charged in a crash captured by a camera in the city last year.

The incident happened around 9 am on December 30, 2021 at the intersection of Bay and Blanchard streets.

Shortly after the collision, Kimberlyn Slater told CTV News that she was on her way to work when the suspect hit her.

“I waited until the light changed to walk and while I was walking I noticed that the vehicle was approaching quickly and I realized that it did not stop and then it hit me,” she said.

The snow-covered vehicle, described at the time as a silver or gray later MINI Countryman, continued through the intersection, narrowly avoiding collisions with other vehicles.

A video of the crash and a run shared by police shows Slattery being blown up by the force of the collision. She lands on her head, but manages to get up and get out of the way.

Several other drivers stopped to help her, and she was lucky not to be seriously injured in the collision.

Victoria police said in a press release on Friday that they had managed to find and seize a suspect vehicle the day after the crash.

“The vehicle was processed by the VicPD’s judicial identification services working with the VicPD’s Collision Reconstruction Team,” the police said in a statement.

“Officers questioned witnesses, identified a suspect and sought judicial permission to allow access to key information about the investigation.”

The driver, whose name police did not share, now faces several charges, police said. Charges include driving without due diligence and caution, not staying at the scene of a collision, driving with obstructed visibility and an illegible license plate.

“The driver faces a $ 1,075 fine and an additional eight unfavorable points,” police said.
