Benedict Cumberbatch made his second appearance as an SNL host tonight, alluding in his opening monologue to his new film, Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which hit theaters in the United States on Friday.
“I am excited to host Saturday Night Live again. It was a really fun, great week. “I have to be honest, though, because most of the sketch writers this week gave me sketches every day, and most of them were for Dr. Strange,” Cumberbatch said. “It’s great. I love the man. I love playing the character. The film is doing very well, but I’ve been in other films.”
Cumberbatch joked that he had gone so far as to say this to SNL’s Lorne Michaels, to which Michaels replied, “Like what?”
“I said, ‘Well,’ The Power of the Dog, ‘and he said,’ Nobody saw it. ‘ I said, “Come on, man. That’s why I was nominated for an Oscar. I did it, ”the host recalls. “I mean, I didn’t win. I was defeated by Will Smith… No, not physically. ”
After hinting at the scandalous Oscar slap, Cumberbatch turned to discuss his excitement about hosting the SNL Mother’s Day show. “Of course, I want to wish my mother a very happy Mother’s Day,” he said. “She’s actually on holiday in Greece right now, and SNL offered to bring her here in first class, and she said, ‘No, I’m on a beach in Greece.’ Are you crazy?'”
Cumberbatch then told his mother that he loved her, noting that when he was younger, he and his mother had “those weird, funny names” they called themselves. “I called her Pucky,” he said, “and she called me Benedict Cumberbatch.”
He later joked, “I went to a boarding school outside of London – you may have heard of him – called Hogwarts.
While he was there, his mother would write him “these amazing letters,” full of beautiful illustrations. “Obviously I can’t do that for her here,” Cumberbatch said, “but I decided to use some of this monologue to thank her for everything she did for me.”
As he began to play sentimental piano music, Cumberbatch turned directly to his mother. “Hey, Mom. This is me, your son, little Benedict, he said. “Thank you for always being by my side.”
Cumberbatch said that as he grew up, whenever he had a problem, his mother had a solution. “For example, when I lost both of my front teeth, I was worried they would irritate me, but you said, ‘It’s all right. Just try to smile without opening your mouth, ”he recalls. “That’s great advice, but it also explains why I still smile like that on every red carpet photo to this day.”
Cut a picture of Cumberbatch, in which his smile is rather a strange grimace.
“Seriously, Mom, thank you,” he said. “You have shown me so much love and support every step of the way. I love you, Puki. ”
Cumberbatch’s wife Sophie, who was in the show’s audience, also received a shout tonight. “I am seriously, constantly in awe of you. “I mean, for starters, you gave birth to our three wonderful boys, and that’s just a little miracle, as any woman will tell you,” he said. In the meantime, you think I was dressed as a magician – although technically it’s a magician.
After explaining that wizards have slaves – unlike his Marvel character Dr. Strange, who has a cloak – he went on to say that he hopes that when his wife really thinks about it, she will realize that their contribution as parents is leveled. “Because if you think it’s hard to be a mother, try to do it,” he said, turning his wrist. “Yes, I just opened the portal. Please. “
