Nkuti Gatwa will take over from Jody Whitaker as Lord of Time in Doctor Who, the BBC reported.
The 29-year-old will become the 14th doctor on the popular BBC show after Whitaker announced last July that she would leave the role.
The Rwandan-born Scottish actor played Eric Efiong in Netflix’s hugely popular Sex Education for socially disadvantaged high school student Otis (Asa Butterfield) and his mother, sex therapist Jean (Gillian Anderson).
Russell T. Davis will return to the next series of Dr. Koi as a showrunner, after initially leading the revival of the show from the 21st century from 2005 to 2009.
In a statement on the official website of Doctor Who, Nkuti said: “There are no exact words to describe how I feel. A mixture of deeply revered, extremely excited and of course a little scared. This role and show means so much to so many people around the world, including me, and each of my incredibly talented predecessors handles this unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care.
“I will do my best to do the same. Russell T. Davis is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself, and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and full of danger. ”
Davis said, “The future is here and this is Nkuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and is so bright, bold and brilliant, I just step back with awe and thank my lucky stars. Nkuti blinded us, grabbed the Doctor, and held those Tardis keys for seconds. It’s an honor to work with him and I can’t wait to get started. “
Whitaker’s Doctor will be seen in another episode, which is expected to air this fall to coincide with the BBC’s centenary. She was the first woman to play the role all the time. It was a move that initially brought high ratings for 10 years, but also sparked controversy with some fans who believed the hero should always be a man, and even led to a Conservative MP who said he had deprived the boys. from a role model and helped them turn to crime.
When Gatva begins her term at Tardis, Doctor Who will not be produced internally by the BBC, but by Bad Wolf Productions, a company founded by CEOs Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter. Both have previously worked at Doctor Who. The company is majority owned by Sony and has previously produced television series, including Discovery of Witches, Its Dark Materials and I Hate Suzie.
Gatva will be known by fans as the 14th Doctor, although the numbering of actors playing Doctor Who has become increasingly confusing over the years. Although it was fairly easy to count the doctors in the show’s original heyday in the 1960s and 1970s, John Hurt emerged as the mysterious military doctor in 2013 for the show’s 50th anniversary, and Joe Martin made his debut. as a Fugitive Doctor in 2020
To further confuse things, both Richard Herndal in 1983 and David Bradley in 2017 starred in screen versions of The First Doctor, originally portrayed by William Hartnell when the series began in 1963.
Whitaker’s current companions – John Bishop as Dan and Mandip Gill as Yaz – will also be replaced by a completely new restart of the show in 2023. On the release of her character Gill said: “I think just like me, just like my character, there will be many tears, but I liked where he ended up. “
After her announcement that she was leaving the role, Whitaker described it as “the best job I’ve ever had,” saying, “I don’t think I’ll ever be able to express what this role has given me.” I will carry the Doctor and the lessons I have learned forever. ”
