1 Miami Grand Prix – LIVE!

Charles Leclerc intends to reaffirm his authority in the 2022 Formula One World Championship race with a victory in the first Formula One race around Miami today.

In Saturday’s qualifier, the championship leader put his Ferrari in pole position with a fantastic lap, almost compared to teammate Carlos Sainz for 1-2 for Scuderia.

Third was Max Verstappen, who won two weeks ago at Emilia Romagna, where Leclerc spun late, but with his own mistake, when he started his last qualifying lap yesterday.

So far, F1 has played four memorable races, with Red Bull’s unreliability hitting defending champions Verstappen with two withdrawals.

But his troubles are nothing compared to those of Lewis Hamilton, who started a more reasonable sixth place in Miami after a gloomy weekend in Imola.

Today’s competition starts at 20:30 BST and is live on Sky Sports.

Problems for Perez!

“I’m losing strength!” Perez spoke on the radio of the Red Bull team. “The engine’s gone, man!”

There are no such worries from his engineers, who tell him that only the Sainz tow was lost. More reliability issues with Red Bull?

“Damage five-zero, the power supply looks good now,” comes the correction. “I think he’s back,” the Mexican replied. He lost about six seconds to Sainz.

Norris kills from seventh place and the slow stop of 3.6 seconds wins a little smile from David Beckham, who watches from the edge of the garage.

Vettel and Magnussen are exactly the British and these hard tires take some time to warm up, allowing both of them to pass! This is the 15th for Norris …

There has been so much noise about the inaugural Miami Grand Prix, but the worry is that a third of the way through this race is now in danger of being something like a plaid flag march.

Max Verstappen seems incredibly calm in the lead in the race and is constantly pulling from Charles Leclerc – his lead is already 3.4 seconds.

Alonso suffered a long 5.7-second pit stop in his battle with Gasley for the seventh and came out with Stroll in the queue in the battle for the 13th!

Behind them, Vettel and Latifi are enjoying a lot of scrap and the German makes him stick inside to go 14th.

With these stops, Russell moves well up the pack and looks good for one stop while sitting eighth, between the two McLaren, who are yet to stand. Then there is Ocon in 10th place, another that started with Hards.

Lane 15/57: Don’t go anywhere yet … The fading of the tires and the many overtaking around this place means that a safety car or VSC is really not ruled out.

Plan D is the strategic invitation for Leclerc, he is 2.8 seconds from Verstappen – and here is how the Dutchman led:

Leclerc goes really wide on turn 17, which costs him a full second and Ferrari can get him out of these struggling mid-range tires sooner or later.

Red Bull tells Verstappen that he is doing an “excellent job” of taking care of his front right.

Magnussen and Tsunoda were the first to leave the midfield.

Lap 11/57: Leclerc fell 1.5 seconds from Verstappen, the biggest difference between the championship leader and Sainz in third place.

Ferrari’s team radio told the Spaniard that he was extending this first stay as long as he could, hoping to force Red Bull to make a strategic decision.

The whisper is that Red Bull think they will win the battle with the tires here in Miami. An early radio message to Max Verstappen from his team suggested that Charles Leclerc’s Pirellis was fighting and a few minutes later he passed him.

Hopefully this is not the death knell for this race in terms of competitiveness for victory.

Workbench leads!

Verstappen is within range of Leclerc’s DRS and Red Bull tells the Dutchman that Ferrari’s right front tire is worn.

Leclerc struggled to keep his tires in check as he led Imola’s sprint two weeks ago.

And this time he is powerless to keep the lead! Verstappen does the DRS work right at the start / finish.

Zhou is EASTER! The Alfa Romeo radio tells him to stop – “I can’t believe it,” says the rookie.
