The M1 in Leicestershire was closed in both directions this morning after a car veered off the highway and hit a tree, leaving a woman with life-threatening injuries. The south side reopened shortly after the collision, which involved a black Ford Mondeo and no other vehicles, but the north side remained closed.
Leicestershire police tweeted at 11 a.m. today: “Please note that the road is closed due to a police incident. Please find alternative routes – updates will follow. Thank you for your patience.”
Google Maps showed that by 11:10 a.m. there was a three-mile queue on the northern lane. Due to the closure, there were still long queues on the roads around the Leicester area, including the M69, A50 and A46.
We reflect this story as it unfolds. We will post updates on the situation as it develops.
