Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) Told USA Today that a national abortion ban is “possible” if Rowe v. Wade is lifted this summer.
“If the expired opinion becomes a final opinion, legislators – not only at the state level but also at the federal level – could certainly pass laws in this area,” McConnell told USA Today when asked if the national ban on abortion is “worthy of debate”. ”
“And if this was the final decision, it was the point that it had to be resolved in one way or another in the legislative process. So yes, it is possible, “he concluded.
His comments came after Politico published a draft majority opinion written by conservative judge Samuel Alito, indicating that Roe v. Wade’s remarkable 1973 ruling would be overturned. The decision considers the woman’s right to an abortion to be constitutional.
The minority leader appears to be cautiously debating whether Republicans will pass legislation banning abortion if they win the Senate in the 2022 interim term.
Many of McConnell’s GOP colleagues condemned the unprecedented leak and called for the consequences to be passed on to the culprit.
McConnell also said Republicans’ position on abortion is clear.
“On the issue of abortion, I think it’s pretty clear where the Republicans are in the Senate,” McConnell said. “And if and when the court makes a final decision, I expect everyone to be more emphatic. But I don’t think the position of Republican senators on this issue is very secret.
Following the Politico report, Democrats expressed outrage at the possibility of Rowe v. Wade being overturned.
Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (DN.Y.) and President Nancy Pelosi (D-California) rebuked him furiously Monday night after news of a leaked draft.
“The reported votes of Republican-appointed judges to overturn Rowe v. Wade will be disgusting, one of the worst and most damaging decisions in modern history,” the two said in a statement.
Sumer said later this week that he would force a vote next week to codify Rowe against Wade. Voting is almost guaranteed to be insufficient because the measure does not have the 60 votes needed to make progress. But Democrats are eager to get Republican votes in the record ahead of the 2022 interim term.

“Voting on this law is not an abstract exercise. This is as urgent and real as it is. “We will vote to protect women’s right to choose,” Schumer said.
The Democrats’ Senate Campaign Committee quoted McConnell’s interview with USA Today to gain support for Democrats.
