COVID-19 sub-variants will determine summer in Niagara; Hirji

What will the first summer of two years look like without restrictions in the bars and restaurants of Niagara?

“It will depend on whether we see more sub-variants of Covid-19,” said Mustafa Hirji, the region’s chief physician. “I’m worried we’ll see another wave of pandemics in the fall, but the emergence of a sub-option may mean it will be sooner than that.”

The regional health official made these predictions during a media briefing on Monday, where he noted the story told by the province’s wastewater data. Although things in Ontario appear to be improving as the number of new infections appears to be declining, Niagara has not yet seen such a clear trend.

“But we are just beginning to see this trend in hospitals,” Hirji said. “Niagara Health does not see a downward trend. Hospitalizations are still higher than the peak of the third wave. The good news is that Covid is mostly a secondary diagnosis for those being treated.

Niagara Public Health reported 1,445 active cases in the region on Monday in ongoing uncertain numbers that are not thought to be accurate descriptions of the true number.

Niagara Health has not updated the hospital breakdown since Friday, when 91 patients were admitted to district hospitals, 28 of which are being treated primarily for the virus. 164 employees and doctors are currently isolating themselves due to the virus.
