DeSantis signs bill to create Day of Victims of Communism

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (right) signed a new law Monday that requires students to learn about communism, establishing a national holiday called Victims of Communism Day.

HB 395 will require special instructions for the “Day of the Victims of Communism”, recognized on November 7 each year.

“Today I established November 7 as the Day of the Victims of Communism to honor those who suffered under communism and to remind people of the destruction that communism has caused around the world, including the deaths of over 100 million,” DeSantis tweeted. Monday. “In Florida, we will tell the truth about communism.

DeSantis, who has been battling Disney World in recent weeks, is among the Republican governors defending cultural war issues across the country, from Virginia to Texas and South Dakota, including numerous rumors, White House hopes. DeSantis regularly lags only behind former President Trump in polls for Republican favorites for president.

DeSantis also announced at the signing of the bill that he plans to approve $ 25 million in state funding for the preservation of the Freedom Tower, a historic landmark for the Cuban community in the state, said the NBC branch in Miami.

Florida Lt. Gov. Janet Nunez (right) told a news conference that the bill was in line with efforts to eliminate critical teachings of racial theory and other “awakened terms” in the classroom. Critical Theory of Race is an academic framework used at the graduate level that analyzes the history and institutions of the United States through the prism of racism.

“Across the country, we see communism and socialism romanticizing,” she told a news conference. “Positive attitudes are the highest of all time in this country. But not here in Florida, because freedom, not Marxism, has a home here in the free state of Florida.

Nunez added that the legislation “will not only teach our children, but also their children’s children, the importance of freedom, the terrible tyranny of communism, ensuring that on November 7 they will all understand what happened around the world in the whole story”.

In March, DeSantis signed the Parents’ Education Bill, also known as the Don’t Say Gay bill, which bans state educators from talking about sexual orientation or gender identity in schools, while also allowing parents to prosecute school districts that violate the measure.

Walt Disney Corp. promised to help appeal the law earlier this year, prompting DeSantis to try to repeal its state self-government zone, a move the company says is illegal unless the state pays off its huge debt.
