Rich Strike brought out a huge upset during the Kentucky Derby in 2022, winning against an odds of 80-1. The 3-year-old thoroughbred, along with Venezuelan jockey Sonny Leon, became the second-largest longshot to win the event’s 148-year history. There has not been a disorder greater than 100 years.
Here is a complete list of the 10 winners in the Kentucky Derby with the longest odds.
1. Donerail (1913), 91-1
Donerail – a property bred and trained by Thomas P. Hayes – won the 39th Run for the Roses in half length after a rally from fifth place at the top of the section. This disorder paid $ 184.90 for a $ 2 bet. Louisville-born jockey Roscoe Gus has had a successful career and became one of the introductory members of the 1963 Kentucky Athletics Hall of Fame.
2. Rich Strike (2022), 80-1
Rick Strike won this year’s race with 3/4 of the length ahead of two favorites, Epicenter and Zandon. Rich Strike didn’t even have to race, but a spot was opened after Ethereal Road scratched the day before. Here is the full story of CBS Sports about the victory of Rich Strike.
3. Rural House (2019), 65-1
Maximum Security finished the race ahead with 1 3/4 lengths, but was eventually disqualified after Country House jockey Flavian Pratt objected. He claims that the winning horse came out of his lane at the last turn and made contact with another horse named War of Will, who then made contact with his horse. This was the first time a horse was disqualified for an offense during the race.
4. Mine That Bird (2009), 50-1
Mine That Bird and jockey Calvin Borel beat Pioneerof the Nile 6 3/4 length after a rally behind. Although far away, the horse had a victory in his blood, as his father was Birdstone, winner of Belmont in 2004. The payout was $ 103.20 for a $ 2 bet. Mine That Bird was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2015.
5. Giacomo (2005), 50-1
If you could use a time machine to bet on any race, that would be it. The final argument almost made the list 70-1 in 2005, finishing only halfway behind Giacomo and jockey Mike Smith. Giacomo’s $ 2 bet became $ 102.60. But even more impressive, due to the fact that both of the best horses were long shots, the $ 2 exact bet paid $ 9,814.80 and the $ 1 superfecta had a $ 864,253.50 payout.
6. Gallahadion (1940), 35-1
Gallahadion finished 1 1/2 in length ahead of heavyweight Bimelech, which was a great achievement as Bimelech won both Preakness and Belmont. Galahaddion and jockey Carol Bierman moved up the track and fired past the two horses forward after the last turn.
7. Apollo (1882), 32-1
Apollo did not follow the usual path of the other winners of the Kentucky Derby. He did not compete as a two-year-old, but still succeeded in 1882 with a half-length victory over Ranimaid. He and jockey Babe Hurd were in the back of the field at 14, but then pushed to sixth in a mile.
8. Charismatic (1999), 31-1
This race had an exciting finale, as the charismatic and jockey Chris Antley made a late push in the home streak to win with a neck over Menifee. Charismmatic almost won the Triple Crown, as did Preakness. However, he finished third in Belmont and unfortunately suffered a fracture at the end of his career.
9. Proud Clarion (1967), 30-1
The proud Clarion lost in all three starts of his two-year career, but it was not a good indicator of what type of career he will have as he gets older. He and jockey Bobby Useri won the 93rd Kentucky Derby in length, while recording the third fastest time at this time at 2: 00.60.
10. Fighter (1918), 29-1
This derby was Exterminator’s first start as a three-year-old and he defeated Escoba in length with jockey William J. Knap in a muddy track. Ironically, owner Willis Sharp Kilmer originally bought the Exterminator not to compete, but to help train two-year-old US champion Briar.
