Final Fantasy XVI
Square Enix
Obviously, we are not yet out of the era of massive video game acquisitions and consolidation, and a new rumor is something many fans have been theorizing for a long time that Sony may be looking to buy Japan’s Square Enix for the PlayStation brand.
This report comes from the PS I Love You show, where Greg Miller says he has heard that Sony is trying to acquire Square Enix, although it is not clear what stage of this process may happen and whether it will or will not happen. no, and he says to take it with a grain of salt.

Square Enix was in the news last week after selling Eidos, Crystal Dynamics and a bunch of IPs like Deus Ex, Tomb Raider and Thief to the Embracer Group. The theory now is that the company is “weakening” to be a potentially more attractive acquisition target.
There is a long-standing relationship between Square Enix and PlayStation, as the two companies have collaborated on the release many, many times in the past. The idea behind the acquisition is that maybe Sony could do something like the Final Fantasy exclusive PlayStation series once and for all. Although after the purchase of Bungie, who knows, because this deal did not require the only franchise for Bungie games, Destiny, to become the exclusive property of PlayStation. Both Destiny and future Bungie games remain cross-platform. But will the same apply to Square Enix and its other IP addresses? This is not clear.
This report joins past rumors that Microsoft is actually looking to acquire a large Japanese studio and enter that market. But again, the Square Enix-Sony relationship seems so established that MS is unlikely to buy them instead (although I guess there is always a number). This has led some to speculate about Microsoft’s interest in companies such as SEGA or Capcom.
Sony also has other rumors that they are potentially buying FromSoftware, but this ultimately has no specific basis for supply and the origin of the latest report turned out to be something of a misunderstanding. However, “logically” Sony also has a close relationship with FromSoftware, and obviously everyone would like From’s solid games and talent on its list as potential exclusives, as proven again, but GOTY leader Elden Ring.
In essence, this comes down to the fact that if you are not Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo or a large technology company, you may be acquired by one of the first. The deal with Activision proved that anything in the industry is possible. In this case, the sale of Sony’s Square Enix makes more sense than most deals, and we’ll see if what Greg Miller heard really comes true.
