A Frenchwoman was fighting for her life in hospital on Monday after her longtime partner stabbed her in both eyes in an apparent attempt to kill her, prosecutors said.

The man was arrested, but he himself was hospitalized due to his psychological condition, they added.

The victim is in critical condition after the suspect stabbed her several times on Sunday in the city of Maison-Alfor, southeast of Paris.

Police arrested the suspect on Sunday afternoon, but released him “as a result of forced hospitalization”, the prosecutor’s office in the Paris suburb of Creteil said.

The alleged perpetrator, about 40 years old, is not known to police.

The couple has four children who were not present at the time of the attack.

A resident of the same apartment building told Le Parisien that the couple had no history of violence.

The investigation is being handled by the Judicial Police of the Val de Marne department.

There are growing concerns about femicide in France, with 102 women killed by their current or former partners in 2020 and 146 in 2019, according to the French Interior Ministry.

More than 200,000 women are victims of relationship violence each year in France, according to the ministry.
