The newspaper acquired the game for a “low seven-figure sum” in January, just three months after it launched.
The game was designed by Josh Wardle, a Brooklyn-based Welsh software engineer, to entertain his beloved puzzle friend during the pandemic.
It gives players six attempts to guess a five-letter word, releasing only one each day.
In November, Wordle was played by only 90 people, but since then the total has grown to millions worldwide.
“Technology Challenges”
A statement from the newspaper said it was still facing “new challenges” as it switched to “The Times technology”.
“Today, for example, some users may see an outdated response that seems closely related to a major recent news event. It’s a completely unintentional coincidence – today’s original answer was uploaded to Wordle last year, “it said.
“At the New York Times Games, we take our role as a place to have fun and escape, and we want Wordle to stay separate from the news.
“But with current Wordle technology, it can be difficult to change words that are already loaded in the game.
“When we found out last week that this particular word would be presented today, we changed it to as many crucial tasks as possible.”
