After several years of making more noise than expected in the postseason, the New York Islanders managed to shock the hockey world in May once again, but for all the wrong reasons.
The club announced on Monday that it parted ways with head coach Barry Trotz, who took over the bench in 2018-19 and led the islanders back to the postseason for three consecutive seasons before missing the boat this year – reaching the conference finals for the last two years before this recent stumbling block.
With more than two decades and 1,812 major league games under his belt as head coach, including 14 playoff series and the Stanley Cup – with the Washington Capitals 2018 – during that period, Trotz’s line of service is likely to be long.
Here’s a look at who to call before deciding your destination for 2022-23:
1. DETROIT RED WINGS
Let’s start with the two obvious options – the other clubs in the league that currently have vacancies for head coach.
First, the Red Wings, who enter 2022-23 with many promising tracks – mostly a talented youth movement led by potential Calder candidates Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond. They also enter next season without a coach, with GM Steve Eisermann relieving Jeff Blaschill of his duties as head of the bench at the end of the 2021-22 regular season.
If you’re wondering if Aizerman will look to Trotz to run his club, all you have to do is turn to the arguments the Hall of Fame gave when he decided to sever ties with Blaschill:
“We fought in defense,” Eisermann told a news conference, explaining the decision. “We failed to improve with the group we had, especially in this area. To make our team play, both individually and collectively, as a more stable defensive hockey team. Three years passed and we tried – it was not a lack of discussion, a lack of effort on behalf of our coaching staff. We’re trying – we just couldn’t do it.

2. PHILADELPHIA FLOWERS
Then there’s Philadelphia. Flyers are harder to sell, given where they are as an organization at the moment, the team has suffered some key losses from the list in recent years and is undertaking more substantial refurbishment to return to where it should be.
Trotz’s best work came when he had elite figures to work with in DC. But in the Islanders, the veteran bench boss picked up a team that had missed the playoffs for two seasons in a row and made them one of the best in the East in three years. They took down the Pens team after a three-year period that saw them move side by side and had three peat bits completed only by the defending champions (Trotz’s Capitals). The islands then fought until the end of the conference for two years in a row, losing both times to eventual champion Bolts.
Trotsky’s first team from the islands was not exactly big in terms of staff – the five best scorers of the club were sophomore Matthew Barzal, along with Josh Bailey, Brock Nelson, Anders Lee and Jordan Eberley. Quality players, no doubt, but not quite Ovechkins or Baxtroms.
The flyers are defective, but they have parts to work with. And while it’s hard to see Trotz choosing Philly, given the other options that may be available to him, it seems likely that the Flyers will at least take the plunge.
3. WINNIPEG JETS
Then we have a team whose coaching situation seems a little hazy.
In what ended a tumultuous, disappointing campaign in Winnipeg, the Jets saw longtime head coach Paul Morris retire from his role during the year, believing his club needed a new voice – then the team handed over the reins to Dave Lowry, who did not Don’t change much of the method that has already made the club stumble.
The end result was that the Jets were out of the playoffs for the first time in five years and the club’s veterans questioned their future with the organization. Needless to say, they need a new leader.
At the Trotsky Jets, they could find some stability on and off the ice – a proven winner who could convince the team’s names to stay and who could significantly improve their game on the ice. There is no denying that Winnipeg has talents on its list – the question has long been how it is used and whether this talent has been motivated to perform to the fullest. Trotz has proven himself skilfully in solving such problems.

4. VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS
Write the Golden Knights in this category of foggy situations.
After a great start to their NHL tenure, Vegas suffered its first disappointing season in the franchise’s young history, missing the playoffs for the first time. Injuries played a key role in why the team stumbled so hard, of course, but there is no doubt that it will still be a difficult pill to swallow for Vegas decision makers given the absurd abundance of talent on the list – and the club’s extreme lengths. went to take them there.
Then comes the question of Robin Lehner’s failure. For a team that has seen more dramatic results off the ice than results on the ice this season, it’s hard to see the Golden Knights stars wanting to get back with Lehner and DeBoer in the fold. And after Lehner signed for another three years as the club’s starter, the decision may have already been made. If Vegas decides to move from its current coach, it would be difficult to find a better option than Trotz, especially given what he did with the Washington star list.
5. FLORIDA PANTERI
What about the Florida Panthers? A favorite after the season, who can look in a new direction if he is short in his match in the first round and against the former team of Trotz.
The most interesting aspect of the Panthers’ situation is the enormous potential of their current group. The Cats finished 2021-22 as one of the most offensively dominant clubs in recent memory and seem to have everything they need to go all the way. Still, against a weaker Capitals team that had questions about injuries coming in the series, the Panthers were made to look much more human than they would have liked.
They have an interim head coach, currently led by Andrew Brunet, who was unexpectedly cast in the lead role when the organization parted ways with Joel Quenville. But there were questions about whether Brunette was the right voice for this crucial part of Panthers history, with the team holding perhaps the greatest chance of a title ever.
The team seemed just as dominant before he got on board and faced some real difficulties here in the post-season, some questioned Brunette’s ability to adapt and react on the move to bring his club over the hurdle. If it goes south, it seems a fair bet that the organization can move towards a more experienced leader.
And given what Trotz was able to do with this other attackingly talented team that had to learn how to play on the other side of the puck, he would be as good a choice as anyone else.
