A man died after being shot in a busy square in North York, Toronto police confirm.
Ambulances were called to the Jane Street and Wilson Avenue area shortly after 8:30 p.m.
Police said they found a man with a gunshot wound and that his injuries appeared life-threatening. Ambulance crews tried to revive him, but he was found dead on the spot.
“I don’t believe there is any immediate threat to the community right now,” Inspector Paul Kravchik told reporters. “I know this is a lively area, so I am asking the public to provide anyone with records or other footage who was in the area around 8:30 to the police.
Kravchik said police believe the shooting was targeted.
So far there is no information about possible suspects.
The shooting took place as many people were shopping in the area, and Kravchik called the killing “rude.”
“It’s very rude. This is alarming. And whenever you see that, you know I can get my family to shop here, right? He said. “So this is very worrying and we are taking it very seriously and we will investigate this as much as possible to have a successful outcome.”
Police are urging anyone with information to contact investigators or call Crime Stoppers anonymously.
