German Foreign Minister Analena Burbock had “an open, friendly conversation with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, together with Dutch Foreign Minister Hextra,” said a source in the German delegation.
“The talks focused on military assistance to Ukraine and reconstruction, as well as how to resolve the blockade of much-needed global food exports from Ukraine,” the media reported.
Germany will start reopening its embassy in Ukraine, German Foreign Minister Analena Berbok said during a visit to Kyiv on Tuesday.
The embassy will start operating with limited capacity, Burbock said, and German Ambassador to Kyiv Anka Feldhusen will again be Germany’s representative in Kyiv.
In his speech, the foreign minister also said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had fallen victim to self-deception.
“He believed that our European values of freedom and humanity made us decadent and weak. The Ukrainians have proved that the opposite is true. “Your will to freedom makes you strong,” Baerbock said.
“And the knowledge that you are fighting for your humanity against an army that knows only cynicism and terror. That is why your struggle marks a turning point in the global dispute between liberal democracy and autocratic regimes, “she continued.
Burbock also visited Babin Yar, a historic site in Ukraine where Nazi massacres took place during World War II. In March, Russian rockets struck near a memorial at the northern end of Kyiv, which marks the site where more than 33,000 Jews were shot dead in 1941.
Zelensky, a Jew, tweeted at the time that the Russian attack was a “recurring story.”
CNN’s Zahid Mahmoud contributed to the report.
