Fugitive prison guard Vicki White died at the hospital from self-inflicted gunshot wounds hours after he was captured by police with Alabama fugitive prisoner Casey White, officials confirmed.
Ms White was taken to hospital after a national search for the couple ended dramatically in a car crash near Evansville, Indiana, on Monday afternoon.
Vanderburg County Medical Examiner Stephen W. Locker announced that the 56-year-old correctional officer died at Evansville Deaconess Midtown Hospital on Monday night, the WHNT reported.
An autopsy will be performed on Tuesday.
Earlier, Indiana Vanderburg County Sheriff Dave Widing told reporters at the scene that Ms. White’s injuries were “very serious” and described her as “quite serious.”
The arrest came near Evansville, Indiana, after a Cadillac car driven by Ms. White was hit by marshals to end the chase.

“The man and woman fled in a vehicle on Highway 41 north, past Highway 57, as you can see they turned here on Birch Park Drive, they passed through this grassy area,” said Sheriff Wedding.
“The Marshals Task Force intercepted them, in fact clashed with them to try to end the pursuit.
He added: “Two bad people are off the streets.”
The sheriff said the couple appeared to be in Indiana six days before they were captured.
“It’s hard to believe they’ve been here so many days. “They are criminals, sometimes they do things that are inexplicable, but I’m glad they did,” he said.
The sheriff added that Casey White’s huge stature helped capture him. “In this case, one of the suspects is 6 feet 9, that’s good for us,” he said.
The arrest came 11 days after the couple’s national search, after Ms. White released the chained Casey White from prison and they disappeared.
“We took a dangerous man off the street today,” Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton told AL.com after his arrest Monday afternoon.
None of the police officers fired their weapons during the arrest of the prisoner and the prison guards, confirmed Mr. Keeley.
Sheriff Singleton said Casey White, 38, had surrendered to police after the persecution.
“It ended a very long, stressful and challenging week and a half,” the sheriff added.
“It ended the way we knew it would happen – with them in custody. He will never see the light of day again, and that is a good thing, not only for our community, but for this country as well.
They were apprehended after investigators received information about the couple’s whereabouts late Sunday night and tracked them to a hotel in the state where they fled. The sheriff said they did not know why the couple ended up in Indiana.
Witness Corey Bradley told CNN he was driving on Highway 41 in Evansville, Indiana, when more than a dozen police cars flew past him.
“Life scared me when they flew in,” Mr Bradley told the news network.
“A little further up the road we were motionless and then I heard what was happening and shot the video as I passed. I kept him moving. I thought I’d stop because it’s a national story. We don’t get a lot of that kind of action here, “Mr Bradley said.
Casey White is now accused of fleeing, and Ms. White is accused of allowing / aiding escape, identity theft and second-degree forgery.

Last week, authorities released photos of what MS White would look like if she changed her blonde hair to a darker color or a shorter haircut.
They also released photos of Casey White’s distinctive tattoos.
“Subjects must be considered dangerous and may be armed with AR-15 rifles, pistols and shotguns,” the agency said.
The Marshals Office says Casey White threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend and her sister in 2015 and said he wanted to be killed by police.
He was detained in Lauderdale County Jail pending trial for the murder of him and is already serving a 75-year sentence for crimes committed in 2015. The two left Lauderdale County Detention Center on April 29 as officers. they said they may have had a romantic relationship before fleeing.
Ms. White’s arrest warrant has been issued and she faces charges of allowing or facilitating first-degree escape.
Last Friday, the car in which they had left Alabama was found abandoned in Tennessee.

On the Monday before his arrest, the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office hit its own employee, Mrs White, on new charges of identity theft and second-degree forgery.
The allegations relate to allegations that Ms. White used a pseudonym to buy an escape car that was used “to facilitate the escape,” officials said.
Surveillance records also show Casey White in Indiana, near where investigators found a second abandoned vehicle tied to him and his lover as a police officer.

She was wearing a dark sweatshirt with her blond hair around her shoulders, peering through the counter before walking away.
The footage was taken on the morning of the prison escape, with officials saying Ms. White stayed at the budget hotel for two nights before escaping.
Sheriff Rick Singleton said the Quality Inn was next to the mall, where the couple abandoned Ms. White’s patrol car in the parking lot and switched to an escape vehicle.
