East Midlands Airport was evacuated after a suspicious device was found in hand luggage. Police later said the device posed no risk to the public and the airport reopened.
An airport spokesman said there was a “full response” to the incident. This comes amid chaos at airports, causing travel delays across the country.
Some passengers decided to fly from the East Midlands instead of Birmingham Airport after being delayed by queues. Today we announced that passengers departing from BHX warn others to “arrive five hours earlier”.

A Leicestershire police spokesman said: “Shortly after 3:10 p.m. today (Tuesday, May 10), a suspicious package was received at the East Midlands Airport’s main terminal. In the interests of employees and public safety, the terminal has been evacuated.
“The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was called to help employees and found that the item did not pose a risk of harm to society. No criminal offenses were identified, no one was detained and the call was made in accordance with the relevant protocol. “
A spokesman for East Midlands Airport said: “Following reports of a suspicious package, the East Midlands Airport terminal was evacuated this afternoon as a precautionary measure so that police could conduct the investigations we need. Now it is open again and we are working with the airlines to take passengers on their flights. We thank the customers for their patience and understanding. ”
