A soldier at the Elmendorf-Richardson Joint Base was killed by a bear on Tuesday during training in Anchorage, the base said.

A U.S. Army soldier from Alaska was part of a small group training in an area west of the Anchorage Regional Landfill when the bear attacked, JBER officials said in a statement. The soldier’s name is kept until their family is notified.

According to officials at the base, the 673rd Squadron of Security Forces initially responded to the attack, and Alaska’s wildlife squad is now searching for the bear in the training area. This area is closed to the public for any entertainment activity, JBER said.

Additional details, including the type of bear involved in the attack, were not immediately available. Base officials said more information would be released when it became available.
