Apple stops production of iPod Touch

Pour one for the iPod, a line of devices that revolutionized portable music more than two decades ago.

On Tuesday, Apple announced that the iPod Touch will no longer be produced. The current model, presented in 2019, will still be on sale until supplies are exhausted. It starts at $ 199 for 32GB. The iPod Touch was the latest in the iPod line – essentially an iPhone SE with an A10 processor and no cellular connection. It was called the iPod, but Music was just one of many home screen apps.

The iPod has a long history of transforming the company when it debuted in 2001. At the time, it was Apple’s rare non-Mac product – although it needed one to transfer music. The iPod was initially ridiculed for its high price of $ 399, but it would soon take over the world and change the digital music landscape forever. The iPod led to greater interoperability with Windows, the iTunes Music Store, and later the iPhone, and saved Apple from the brink of bankruptcy and inadequacy.

The iPod touch came out in September 2007, just months after the iPhone arrived on the shelves. However, it has not been promoted as part of Apple’s product catalog for some time, after losing its only place in the Music section when Apple shuffled the menu on its site last year. The only way to find it now is to deliberately search the Apple Store, and few people probably do.

Apple rightly points out that it really doesn’t need a special music player anymore (not that the iPod Touch really was). “The experience of exporting the music library to the world is integrated into Apple’s product line – from iPhone and Apple Watch to iPad and Mac,” the company said in a statement. “Today, the spirit of the iPod lives on. We’ve integrated an amazing music experience into all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to the HomePod mini and the Mac, iPad and Apple TV. And Apple Music provides industry-leading sound quality with surround audio support – there’s no better way to enjoy, discover and experience music. ”

Without the iPod touch, the cheapest children’s device is the 10.2-inch iPad, which starts at $ 329.
