One of the shocking headlines in the video game industry (and the football world today) is the split between EA and FIFA.
As we have already heard, Electronic Arts will remove the FIFA brand from its name in favor of EA Sports FC. It is advertised as “the future of interactive football”, but it seems that FIFA may have other ideas.
According to reports, FIFA is already working with other third-party developers to launch brand new football games, with plans to release these titles (including non-simulated ones) in the third quarter of 2022. It is also aiming to release some games in 2023 and hopes to have a ready-made simulated title by 2024 (via Polygon).
FIFA President Gianni Infantino responded by assuring football fans that there will always be only one “authentic” FIFA game:
“I can assure you that the only authentic, genuine FIFA game will be the best available for gamers and football. [soccer] fans. The FIFA name is the only global, original title. FIFA 23, FIFA 24, FIFA 25 and FIFA 26 and so on – the constant is the name of FIFA and it will stay forever and will remain the best “
FIFA 23 will be EA’s last FIFA game, and then the series will be known as ‘EA Sports FC’. It is unclear at this stage how FIFA will potentially compete with the EA title, which already has a licensing portfolio of more than 19,000+ players, 700+ teams, 100+ stadiums and 30 leagues.
How do you feel about this news at the moment? Do you think FIFA will do without EA? How about an EA without FIFA attached to its name? Start the discussion in the comments below.
