Google is expected to develop glasses with AR, and the company has indeed announced a prototype of a pair of glasses that it is developing at this year’s Google I / O conference.
The glasses seem to be focused on useful features, such as language translation. Google acquired the maker of smart glasses North in 2020, and its work with Google Glass was a pioneer of smart glasses almost a decade ago.

Google’s teasing about her glasses was short, but the company’s continued steps in AR tools through its phones, search and lens seem ready to be transferred to glasses. But there is no clear indicator of when these glasses may be available for purchase.
Google has been active in VR and AR for years. Although no company has everyday smart glasses in regular use, Google seems to be trying again.
One of the most interesting parts of the new eyewear initiative is the focus on utility. The ability to be understood or to understand is actually useful. These glasses do not focus on floating dinosaurs or magical experiences; they are trying to help. Meta’s recent ambitions for smart glass are also focused on utility, but Google’s experience and tools seem well suited to the challenge.
As Google CEO Sundar Pichai noted in a blog post, these prototype glasses are focused on providing language in the field of view. Google’s work with AR is likely to be growing, but it also seems to be trying services first. In that sense, these glasses now look very different from the more magical VR headphones that Daydream was. In many ways, it looks like things I’ve always expected Google Glass to do one day.
