Ukraine will suspend some of Russia’s gas exports to Europe via pipelines due to disruptions at key transit points, the country’s gas transmission system operator (GSTOU) said in a statement on Tuesday.

Against the background of the Russian invasion, Ukraine continued its operations to transport Russian gas through the country.

But GSTOU said it was currently “impossible to meet obligations” to European partners due to “intervention by the occupying forces”. It says Russia’s intervention, including unauthorized gas seizures, has “threatened the stability and security” of Ukraine’s gas transportation system.

As a result, it was decided to suspend operations at 7 am local time on Wednesday at the Sohranvka inlet gas metering station and the Novopskov border compressor station, through which almost a third of Russia’s gas to Europe – up to 32.6 million cubic meters per day – is transited.

Ukraine has said it is possible to transfer temporarily inaccessible capacity from Sohranovka to the Sudzha checkpoint in Ukrainian-controlled territory.

However, Russia’s state-owned energy company Gazprom said it was “technologically impossible” to transfer gas to Ukraine to a new entry point, the agency said in a statement.
