“Attendance at the Los Angeles summit has not yet been decided, because we are proposing that no one be excluded because we are striving for the unity of the whole of America,” Lopez Obrador said during a daily briefing in Mexico City.
“We feel there should be no confrontation. Even with the differences, we have to have a dialogue, all Americans, and then we have yet to resolve this issue; we have very good relations with the government of President Biden. We want everyone to be invited. This is Mexico’s position, “he added.
US officials have repeatedly said that the governments of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela will not be invited to the summit because of their human rights.
As a host country, the United States has the privilege of electing leaders to be invited to the summit.
However, the White House said on Tuesday that no decisions had been made following Lopez Obrador’s comments.
“We have not decided who will be invited and no invitations have been issued yet,” said White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki.
If Lopez Obrador resigns from Mexico at the June summit, it would be a significant disregard for the White House, and in particular the administration of US President Joe Biden, who have tried to use the summit as an opportunity. to strengthen Latin America’s ties with the United States amid growing Chinese cooperation in the region.
The Mexican president spoke at home after a tour of Central America and Cuba, where he met with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel and former President Raul Castro. In Cuba, Lopez Obrador said he would urge Biden not to exclude any American country at the summit.
“I am aware that there are political groups in the United States that are engaged in confrontation that would like to hold the people of Latin America and the Caribbean hostage, as is the case with the blockade against Cuba, which is strongly encouraged by Cuba’s politicians. influence in the United States, “said Lopez Obrador.
“But I consider the blockade inappropriate and inhumane (…) an entire nation cannot suffer in the interests of a group, so the US government must decide on this because it is a matter of human rights related to sovereignty. , “he added.
He added: “If he is expelled, if not everyone is invited, a representation from the Mexican government will go, but I will not go. Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard will represent me.”
The America’s Summit is a traditional gathering of North, Central and South American and Caribbean countries and is held every four years.
US-Cuba relations have been strained for decades, although the two countries held their first high-level talks in four years in April.
Nicaragua and Venezuela have bad relations with Washington after an extensive list of sanctions against their governments and recent dubious elections.
