(Pocket-lint) – During questions and answers from investors in Japan this week, Nintendo apparently acknowledged that the transition to a new generation of consoles when the Switch was running remained a “major concern”.
Given the disastrous results of the transition to the Wii U from the Wii a few years ago, it’s understandable why Nintendo will be worried, given the absolutely stellar continued performance of the Switch in contrast.
Nintendo’s goal is ostensibly to ensure that consumers don’t just feel tied to a single piece of hardware, but are encouraged to stick to Nintendo as a brand when abandoning new technologies.
Schemes such as Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions can help bind people more than they have before, although the continued release of classic titles in the Mario, Zelda and Pokémon franchises, among others, is likely to play an important role.
What this means for Nintendo’s graphics for the new hardware, of course, is not clear – since the launch of Switch OLED last year, there have been no hints as to when a suitable next console may appear.
Another major question that will arise when such a device is announced will be whether it will be backward compatible with Switch games, or whether Nintendo will continue to include this as part of its online membership schemes.
