Snake Island has become the focus of a decisive and brutal battle between Ukraine and Russia, as the winner will control an important corner of the Black Sea, the Defense Ministry said, according to James Kilner.
In recent weeks, Russian forces have tried to reinforce Snake Island, 22 miles off the western tip of the Ukrainian coast, with Wagner mercenaries, but they have been bombed and shelled by the Ukrainian air force.
“If Russia consolidates its positions on Snake Island with strategic air defenses and cruise missiles for coastal defense, they could dominate the northwestern Black Sea,” the defense ministry said.
Military tactics also said that control of Snake Island or Snake Island would give Russia a launching pad for strikes behind the Ukrainian cities of Odessa and Nikolaev.
Snake Island gained cult status at the start of the war when the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, Moscow, ordered a small contingent of Ukrainian troops to surrender. The Ukrainian soldiers eventually surrendered, but not before they told Moscow to go to hell.
