Heavy weather is expected for South Dakota today
On Thursday afternoon and evening, the region is set for a new round of difficult weather.
The day will start with above-average temperatures, with NWS in Sioux Falls predicting that the maximum heat index in the city will be in the 90s, approaching the record high set in 1907.
Later tonight, the NWS predicted a “moderate” risk of severe weather for parts of eastern South Dakota, which is fourth on the five-point scale for severe weather risks.
Destructive winds, heavy hail and even one or two tornadoes are possible, and the threat of tornadoes is greater in northeastern South Dakota.

Scattered thunderstorms could develop in central South Dakota and Nebraska until late afternoon, according to NWS.
The storms will merge in a line as they approach Corridor Highway 29 by early evening. Threats from the strongest storms will include very high hail and destructive winds, according to the NWS.
Due to recent and expected heavy rains in some areas, sudden floods are possible. Several tornadoes and high temperatures near record levels and heat index values in the 1990s were also possible this afternoon, according to the NWS.
The wind could exceed 80 mph with the storms, says NWS.
When can bad weather start?
