Finland says it must apply for NATO membership “without delay”

The President and Prime Minister of Finland said that the country should immediately apply for NATO membership.

In a statement Thursday, leaders said they were in favor of applying for NATO membership, paving the way for the alliance’s expansion amid Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The announcement by President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin means that Finland is almost certain that it will aspire to NATO membership, although official steps remain before the application process begins.
