Users of AR glass in the Google demo video were able to see the translations appear right in front of their eyes as they carried the device and talked to another person. Those who wore the device seemed to have subtitles that followed them, just like a real-time mobile transcription service. This was the only look that Google gave to its AR glasses.

In his speech, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stressed the importance of living in the real world with a focus on technologies that help improve this real-world experience. Google seems to have learned from its experiment with Google Glass nearly a decade ago. Critics of Google Glass have often raised concerns about the privacy and security of the device. Further discussion of these AR glasses in a blog post by Pichai re-focuses on the functions of augmented reality and how this can improve everyday life.

“These AR capabilities are already useful for phones, and the magic will really come to life when you can use them in the real world without being bothered by technology,” Pichai wrote. “This potential is what excites us most about AR: the ability to spend time focusing on what’s important in the real world, in our real life.”

It is not clear what other features are planned for these AR glasses. But the AR translation feature is the perfect use case to focus on if your selling point is that this device is actually about interacting away from the computer screen and life right now.
