Langley City Council has taken the unusual step of reprimanding Mayor Val van den Brook for what he said was “inappropriate” behavior.
In a press release Thursday, the city said it could not reveal what caused the move, citing privacy and confidentiality legislation.

However, he said the mayor’s behavior violated his policy of respect for the workplace, the Workers’ Compensation Act and the guidelines for health and safety at work.
“The council has taken the issue very seriously and would not take such action due to minor concerns,” the statement said.
“The Council assures the community that due process and procedural justice have been observed. In particular, the complaint was independently investigated by a third party with experience in workplace law. “

According to the report, van den Brook was given a “fair opportunity” to participate and respond to allegations before the council voted to reprimand on May 10.
Her appointments to the Fraser Municipal Health Advisory Board, the Healthier Communities Partnerships, the Langley Christmas Bureau, the Langley Christmas Breakfast, the Langley Local Immigration Partnership and the Youth Advisory Committee have been revoked.

The measure remains in force until a new council is sworn in after the October municipal elections.
