Hollywood actor Fred Ward died on May 8 at the age of 79, his publicist revealed on Friday.
The San Diego-born man began his career in the 1970s and continues to star in many well-known films, including Tremory, Henry and June, Sweet Home Alabama and Enough.
He was best known for his role as Gus Grissom in the 1983 film of the American space program The Right Stuff against Sam Shepard and Dennis Quaid.

Ward died Sunday, his publicist Ron Hoffman said this week, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, there is no shared cause or place of death, which is his family’s wish.
Ward, who was part of Cherokee, had experience in boxing, which led him to play the role of rude rough guys on the big screen.
He also had notable roles in Silkwood with Meryl Streep in 1983, then Swing Shift with Goldie Hawn in 1984.
His last role was in 2015 as Eddie Velcoro for two episodes of True Detective with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

He achieved his first break in the 1973 television movie The Age Of The Medici as Niccolo.
He then appeared on television shows such as Quincy ME in 1978.
Ward was chosen again and again as a rough guy, until he finally stood out when he got the role of prisoner John Anglin in the 1979 film Escape from Alcatraz with Clint Eastwood. He was playing a prisoner who wanted to escape from the San Francisco prison.
He could also make periodicals: seen with Maria DeMedeiros as the writer Anais Nin in the 1990 film Henry and June, starring Henry Miller. Uma Thurman was also in the movie as June
Scary Movie: In 1990, he starred as Earl Bass, starring Kevin Bacon on the left in the horror film Tremory.
This was followed by Jamie’s role in “Heart Arrest” in 1979 and Reese’s role in “Southern Comfort” in 1981.
In 1983, he received a major breakthrough in the critically acclaimed space film The Right Stuff.
He opposed stage actor Shepard and movie star Quaid. The film revolves around the development of the American space program from the destruction of the sound barrier.

The drama Silkwood followed in 1983, and then Swing Shift in 1984, before being given the lead role in the 1985 film Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins.
Since then, Fred has worked steadily, often making three or four films a year.
In 1990 alone, he made four films: Tremors, Catchfire, Miami Blues and Henry & June (starring Henry Miller).
Ward played a prominent role as Walter Stuckel in the 1992 ensemble The Player with co-star Whoopi Goldberg. That same year, he played Wyatt Earp in the TV movie Four Eyes and Six-Guns.

His work in the 1990s was completed in small parts in Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult (1994), Chain Reaction (1996), Dangerous Beauty (1998) and the mini-series Invasion Earth (1998).
He was very busy in the 2000s with roles in major Hollywood films such as The Crow: Salvation, Joe Dirt and Summer Catch, as well as in the thriller by Jennifer Lopez Enough (2002).
And he appeared in two episodes of the emergency room in 2006 as Eddie.
He has been working less than 2010; he appeared in only a few roles as Admiral Tui in 2 Guns in 2013.
The actor has been married a total of three times.
His first wife was Carla Avon Stewart. They married in 1965 and divorced in 1966.
He then married Sylvia Ward, with whom he shares his son, musician Django. It is not known what year they divorced.
In 1995 he married Marie-France Boassel. She filed for divorce in August 2013, but they reconciled later that year, according to TMZ.
