Quebec cancels the mandate for COVID-19 masks on Saturday

This weekend, Quebec’s face mask mandate will be revoked in most indoor areas, as public health officials say the situation with COVID-19 is improving across the province.

Quebec is the last jurisdiction in North America to remove the mask requirement.

From midnight on Saturday, masks can be removed, but not everywhere.

Here is a (non-exhaustive) list of places where masking will no longer be mandatory from May 14:

  • Bars
  • Restaurants
  • museums
  • Shopping centers
  • China
  • libraries
  • CEGEP and universities
  • Performance halls
  • Sports centers
  • Primary and secondary schools
  • Grocery stores
  • Bus stations
  • Fitness rooms

There are still places where masks remain mandatory.

They include:

  • Public transport (bus, train, metro)
  • Health facilities (hospitals, clinics, CLSC) with the exception of mental health facilities
  • Residences for the elderly, RPAs

Public health recommends that some people still wear the mask indoors, such as the elderly, people with weakened immune systems and those who are at higher risk of becoming infected with COVID-19.

People who have recently been infected with coronavirus or who live with someone who has tested positive are also strongly advised to continue wearing the mask for up to 10 days.

“When we have symptoms, we stay at home and isolate ourselves and protect others,” said Dr. Luke Boylo, Quebec’s interim director of public health.

On Thursday, the Quebec Ministry of Health announced that hospitalizations had dropped by 1821, with 60 people in the intensive care unit.
