Sony introduces redesigned WH-1000XM5 headphones with improved noise reduction

The flagship Sony WH-1000XM4 noise canceling headphones have been on the market for some time, and today Sony announced its fifth generation WH-1000XM5 headphones, which boast a new design and several improvements over the previous model.

The revamped headphones replace the wrapped arms that rotate on the XM4 with an exposed shoulder that has a single point of contact on the headphones, which are slightly larger than the previous generation and aim to reduce wind noise when you’re outdoors. and around. The headphones weigh 250 grams (against 254 grams on the XM4) and a non-click slider is included in the synthetic leather headband to help wearers fit properly.

Like the previous model, the XM5 provides up to 30 hours of battery life on a single charge with active noise cancellation on, 40 hours on ANC off (10 hours more than those on the XM4), and the headphones will reach full charge in 3 hours. The XM5 also supports Power Delivery and will give users three hours of playback from just three minutes on a charger.

There are eight microphones (four more than the previous model) that have been moved to a more optimal noise reduction position – Sony says this makes them better at cutting out high-frequency noise. Meanwhile, four beam-forming microphones have been built in for better voice call quality, and the NC / Ambient button replaces the Custom button on the XM4, although the button remains reprogrammable to activate voice assistants, including Siri.

A new 30mm driver provides the sound, and the headphones use LDAC to transmit high-definition audio, given the correct source device, while SBC and AAC are also supported, as well as DSEE Extreme upscaling for compressed audio. The surround sound effect of Sony 360 Reality Audio is also on board.

Sony has abandoned the folding folding mechanism seen on the XM4, which pushes one cup inside the other, so the hard case for the XM4 has been replaced with a larger one. The XM5 also comes with a 3.5mm headphone cable.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones cost $ 399 – $ 50 more than the XM4 – and are available in white, silver and black. They will be available for purchase online from Amazon and other electronics retailers from May 20. Expect MacRumors to review the headphones, including a full comparison with Apple’s AirPods Max.
