The cold spring weather will continue on Vancouver Island

Another cool afternoon by the water and people are appropriately dressed for the cold weather.

It’s almost mid-May in Victoria, but it can be confused with winter.

The unusually cold weather began in April thanks to a system that extracts cold air from the Arctic.

And it’s much colder than normal, according to Armel Castellan, a meteorologist for emergency preparedness, the environment and climate change in Canada.

“It was cold, and it was constant. We had an open door to the Pacific Ocean, which gave us a slap in the face after a collision. In fact, Nanaimo saw his wettest April in history, 245 percent of normal rain.

CHEK News viewer Margaret Ryan took these photos during her trip from Tofino to Lake Kouichan this morning.

Experts expect this pattern of time to last for some time.

The snow cover is still intact in the interior, Castellan said, leading to fears of potential flooding if the weather suddenly warms up.

“If we have all the conditions in order; so a lot of snow to melt at a higher altitude and a lot of warming combined with rain in a certain watershed. These are the conditions that suggest a potentially alarming flood. “

Capital Iron boasts the largest selection of outdoor patio furniture in British Columbia, but owner Mike Black said the items that should be flying out the door at this time of year are not.

“Any of the winter or warmer clothes we have left, and some of the spring things that are usually used in rainy and cold weather, these things fly out the door. We get a little, but we have a little. ”
