Two injured after bullets flew between vehicles on the Ottawa highway

Ottawa police said people in two moving vehicles shot at each other on a highway through downtown Ottawa on Thursday afternoon.

In a press release, city police said it happened around 1:20 p.m., as the two vehicles were traveling west on the same lane on Highway 417 between the Parkdale Avenue and Metcalfe Street exits. It is mentioned that one vehicle is a white Mercedes-Benz.

Two people with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds appeared in hospital that afternoon, police said. The man and the woman, both 25 years old, did not cooperate with the staff and were discharged from the hospital.

Police did not say whether the two were in the same vehicle.

Ottawa police said the shooting was targeted and wanted people who may have seen something or taken footage of the shooting to contact its weapons and gang unit.

As the afternoon rush began on Thursday, provincial police said there is a police investigation further west around the highway.

Police then said they were working to close the western highway, but in a post-deleted tweet indicated that some lanes would remain open, as closing would mean for people returning home.

UPDATE OPP now says that WB 417 is closed from Metcalfe to Carling, so in the city center and just west of it. #OttTraffic
