In the latest update of COVID-19, Alberta’s chief medical officer, Dr. Dinah Hinshaw, says there are two possible cases of severe acute hepatitis of unknown origin in children in the province. Hinshaw said both children were under the age of 16.
Hinshaw says one patient has been treated and released and the other is still in hospital.
Cases of this mysterious disease have been reported across Canada. The Toronto Children’s Hospital said Tuesday it has identified seven possible cases of liver disease. The cases were reported between October 1, 2021 and April 30, 2022.
Manitoba has also observed a probable case of this liver disease.
According to Hinshaw, the province works closely with federal, provincial and territorial officials to monitor emerging information.
The World Health Organization says there are reports of nearly 300 possible cases in 20 different countries.
Federal health officials are still investigating whether these cases are related in any way.
More than 100 possible cases of this liver disease have occurred among children in the United States, including five deaths.
