Professor Percy denied saying that. He admitted to complimenting Miss June on her hair, but denied touching her, claiming he was wearing eye drops at the time.
Thirty minutes after the incident, Miss Jenny told the Reverend Claire Haynes, the college priest, what was supposed to have happened and reported it to university authorities, prompting the dean to resign pending a new investigation.
The college commissioned Kate Wood, a former police officer, to investigate. She interviewed both parties and in her final report described Miss Jeune’s account as “authentic, detailed and faithful”, prompting Christ Church to turn to the tribunal.
Miss June continued to report the incident to police when she discovered that Professor Percy had refused investigators.
However, this did not lead to closure. So far, “Miss X” has become the subject of discussion among his supporters, who have described her in various ways in quotes from anonymous sources in the press and in blogs such as “side issue” and “inappropriate” and “illegal immigrant”.
(In fact, her visa, signed by Prof. Percy, expires this September when she plans to return to New Zealand.)
Professor Percy’s claim that he was suffering from mental health problems slowed down the tribunal to such an extent that Miss June had to give up her doctorate.
“I kept asking for more time, so I was given an ultimatum,” she said.
“My university said, either you go back to New Zealand and finish it, or we pull you out. I couldn’t go back easily because of Covid, and I was committed to doing it, so I lost my lifelong ambition to become a professor. “
Uncovering her side of the story
After 10 days of mediation, the two finally reached an agreement in February, in which compensation was awarded and Prof. Percy resigned. However, his recent interview made Miss Jeune finally speak.
“Do you honestly think I would let someone rewrite my experience and share it?”
“It was shocking to see so many people supporting him without knowing all the facts. I have not yet been able to forgive the group of supporters who have admitted that they have gathered to “talk”.
“But other people, like those who supported his GoFundMe page, without hearing the other side of the story, I’m sorry for them because they were manipulated.”
