Call the Foundation for Eating Disorders Latest CIHI Statistics “Anxious”

The Newfoundland and Labrador Eating Disorders Foundation called recent statistics published by CIHI “shocking” and “alarming.”

The latest data from the Canadian Institute of Health Information shows that hospitalizations for eating disorders among girls aged 10 to 17 have increased by nearly 60 percent since March 2020. The rate of hospitalizations for children with eating disorders is about 30 per 100,000 in this province compared to 20 per 100,000 nationally, an increase of approximately 30 per cent from pre-pandemic levels.

Paul Tommy, executive director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Eating Disorders Foundation, says what they’ve seen over the past two years is in line with CIHI’s findings.

He says they have seen an unprecedented increase in the number of people participating in the Janeway and HOPE programs. He says the waiting lists for their programs and Janeway are shocking,

He says there are people in youth programs who have been waiting more than a year to see nutritionists and psychologists.
