M5 motorway closes after “police incident”

A section of the West Midlands Highway was closed for the second time in two days, this time due to a “police incident”. The M5 north of junction 1, the West Bromwich junction and the M6 junction south at junction 8 were closed at around 11.30am after an accident.

National Highways West Midlands said: “The M5 north is currently closed from J1 to the M6 connecting roads and from M6 south J8 to M5 J1 due to a police incident. The Central Highway Police Group is on site and engaged. Please take the extra time for your trip and look for alternative routes. ”

Shortly afterwards, the highway team said the “police-led incident” had been cleared and all lanes reopened in both directions. However, there were traffic jams of up to four miles, which caused delays for drivers.

The incident came a day after the same section of road was closed to the north due to a collision of several vehicles around 12.30pm on Saturday (May 14th). Police and firefighters then arrived at the scene and the road was closed for about an hour.

This incident then added delays on the M6 to the south, which was also closed at approximately the same time after the accident, with traffic from the M5 heading north diverting south to junction 7 to make a U-turn as the M5 north to the M6 was closed.

Both the national highways and the West Midlands police were asked for further details on Sunday’s “police-led incident” as to why the highway was closed. More details to follow …
