BRAMPTON – New Ontario Democrats say they will increase their planned increases in the province’s disability support program.

The change was followed by criticism that the party’s initial 20 per cent increase, which it promised to implement immediately, would keep those who rely on the ODSP for their income below the poverty line.

Now NDP leader Andrea Horvat says the party will increase the ODSP by 20 per cent immediately and raise it to double the current percentage in the party’s second year in office, if elected.

Horvat said payments to the ODSP would be indexed so that “no Ontario resident will ever live in legal poverty again.”

Liberals said they would increase the ODSP by 20 percent in two years, while progressive conservatives added a five percent increase to their platform last week.

Meanwhile, the Green Party has promised to double ODSP payments.
