SNL is taking on the case against Johnny Depp and Amber Heard

After a particularly challenging week of news events, Saturday Night Live took refuge in the defamation lawsuit between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

This weekend’s broadcast, hosted by Selena Gomez and featuring music guest Post Malone, was presented by Kate McKinnon, who plays MSNBC presenter Nicole Wallace. After shaking up other headlines – “Political Consequences of Recent January 6 Summons, Updates on Russian Helicopter shot down from Ukraine, plus shortage of baby formula nationwide” – McKinnon told viewers that her network would instead reflect the celebrity process. .

“I know this is not the best story right now,” she said, “but with all the problems in the world, it’s not good to have a news story that we can all watch together and say, ‘Oh. I’m glad it’s not me? “

In the courtroom, Depp (Kyle Mooney) was sitting in a witness box questioned by his lawyer (Eddie Bryant), who asked about an incident in which Hurd was accused of leaving feces in Depp’s bed.

Despite the objections of Hurd’s lawyer (Heidi Gardner), the presiding judge (Cecily Strong) said he would allow Depp’s team to release a surveillance video that allegedly confirmed his version of events. “Because it sounds fun,” Strong said, “and it’s a fun process.”

In the scene from the videotape, Kenan Thompson played a property manager who was the first to make the unpleasant discovery in Depp’s bed. (“Oh, hell, no!” He exclaimed.)

Gardner objected again, but Strong told her it was canceled again. “I’d like to see more of this video,” Strong said. When Gardner asked why, she replied, “Because it’s funny.”

As the videotape continued, Thompson and a second member of the household, played by Ego Nvodim, were arguing over who would be responsible for cleaning the bed. They both said Hurd may have made the mess after Depp was accused of cutting off part of his finger in battle.

Asked how much more they have to keep releasing the tape, Strong replied: “We don’t need to watch any of this. But we want. So quiet. ” (Then she took a sip from a glass of wine.)

Back in the bedroom, Thompson and Nvodim continued their argument, joined by a housekeeper played by Melissa Vilasseñor and a laundress played by Chris Red. (Red, looking around the scene, had guessed that Thompson was the culprit. “So he really did, man,” he said. “He finally gave up.”)

Strong turned to Mooney and the others in the courtroom. “This process has given me a lot to think about,” she said. “On the one hand, I believe in Mr. Depp’s story. But on the other hand, your constant little smile lets me know that this isn’t the first woman you’ve made so angry that she’s climbed into your bed.

Send Netflix of the Week

One sign of a successful parody is that you don’t have to be familiar with the source material that is being satirized to evaluate it.

Example: If you’re already watching Netflix’s reality show “Old Enough!”, A long-running Japanese program that tracks young children as they try to complete tasks on their own, hey, good for you. If not, you can still appreciate this potential American remake, which is instead for longtime boyfriends trying to perform real-world tasks for their significant other, such as buying shallots and night fog pencils (something what we just learned existed because of this sketch).

The whole world is a stage of the week

Two recent and not-so-humorous New York scene events that may better inform your understanding of the following sketch: Many shows continue to be interrupted, postponed, or canceled by Covid; and the theater company “Me Me Out” stepped up security after a nude video of actor Jesse Williams was released online.

Johnny Depp’s defamation case against Amber Heard

Map 1 of 6

In the courtroom. A defamation lawsuit involving former married actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard is currently pending in Fairfax County Court in Virginia. Here’s what you need to know about the case:

Ms. Hurd’s option. Mr Depp’s lawsuit came in response to a publication Ms. Hurd wrote for The Washington Post in 2018, in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic violence.” Although she did not mention her ex-husband’s name, he and his lawyers say she apparently meant their relationship.

Allegations of domestic violence. In the 2020 trial, Ms. Hurd accused her ex-husband of assaulting her for the first time in 2013 after they began dating, and described in detail other cases in which he hit her, hit her in the head and he throws it on the ground. Since then, Mr. Depp has accused her of hitting him, kicking him and throwing objects at him.

As part of the sketch itself, a play called “A Storm Within” is terrifying, but funny, when the entire lead cast goes down with Covid and leaves the show to his backups, including one (Bowen Young) who really can’t wait to performed his naked scene.

Steve Martin cameo of the week

There was no chance that the Gomez-led show would go unnoticed by either Steve Martin or Martin Short, her colleagues from “Only Murders in the Building”, who are both upcoming in “SNL”

Although their touring schedule prevented them from performing live, Martin appeared in this film segment about the inventor of the screaming pillow and the accident-prone muse (Bryant), who inspired him to create this and other enduring innovations. Bryant’s physical comedy carries the sketch, but it’s good to see that Martin hasn’t lost touch with scientific innovation.

Weekend Update Jokes of the Week

At the weekend update bureau, presenters Colin Yost and Michael Che went on to talk about the collapse of the cryptocurrency, the shortage of infant formula and the catastrophic news of the week.

Yost began:

If you think things are a little worse this week, remember that yesterday was Friday the 13th, tomorrow is a super bloody moon, and according to the most annoying person you know, Mercury is in retrograde. Is it me or does every story this week sound like the opening voice behind a Crazy Max movie? The year is 2022. A virus is raging across the planet. Digital money has collapsed. Babies have nothing to eat. Women are forced to reproduce. Men are ready to die for gasoline. And we suffer under the guidance of the one known only as Joe. [His screen shows a picture of President Biden as the “Mad Max: Fury Road” villain Immortan Joe.]

He continued, returning to the crypto crash.

The cryptocurrency collapsed this week, with bitcoin losing almost half its value. And now he has to legally change his name to Bit O ‘Coin. In fact, the entire crypto market has lost over $ 1 trillion, but you can get that money back quickly, as long as you accumulate baby formula.

That he raised the topic:

This shortage of formula is frightening. Babies are very sensitive. You can’t just feed them something. I once tried to give my little nephew something different from his usual formula, and he almost choked on that hot-winged bone.
