Saturday Night Live took a break from politics this week to give viewers a live coverage of Johnny Depp’s trial of Amber Heard’s Cuckoo.
“I know this isn’t the best story right now,” said Kate McKinnon as MSNBC’s Nicole Wallace at the top of the cold open sketch. “But with all the problems in the world, isn’t it good to have a news story that we all watch together and say, ‘Oh, I’m glad it’s not me?’
The sketch focused on the obscene claim that Hurd had left “fecal matter” in Depp’s bed, imagining the moment when his various domestic staff had discovered the “dock” in question.
When Hurd’s lawyer objected on the grounds that it had nothing to do with Depp’s guilt or innocence, Judge Cecily Strong replied: “That’s true, but I will allow it. Because it sounds fun, and this test is fun. “
Meanwhile, Kyle Mooney did his best to embody Depp’s smiling answers to lawyers’ questions. “Mr. Depp, do you find this process amusing?” The judge asked. “A little, yes,” he said.
“Okay, I think I’ve seen enough,” the judge concluded. “This test gave me a lot to think about. On the one hand, I believe in Mr. Depp’s story, but on the other hand, your constant little smile lets me know that this is not the first woman you have made so angry that she has climbed into your bed. ”
“I guess I’m known as a complete nightmare,” Depp said in response, putting on his shadows, to which the judge said, “Okay, okay, anyway, I’m just glad it’s not me.”
