Speeding in Ottawa: Police launch enforcement program

Ottawa police say a motorcyclist faces various charges following a shooting at law enforcement on Friday night.

This week, the police returned its Project Noisemaker implementation program to combat speeding and stunt driving, along with over-noisy vehicles.

Police said on Saturday morning that officers stationed on Strandherd Drive and Merivale and Meadowlands on Friday night had issued two stunt charges, 20 speeding tickets and three red light tickets.

One of the accused stuntmen was on a motorcycle and was traveling at 123 km / h in a zone of 70 km / h on Strandhard near Longfields, police said.

Police say the driver refused to stop for police and tried to flee before being arrested. The person also faces charges of fleeing the police, resisting a police officer, dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving with an inappropriate license, and allegations of lack of mufflers and license plates.

Last year, police charged 157 with stunting as part of Project Noisemaker, up from 78 in 2020. Police also handed out nearly 1,200 speeding tickets and 175 fines for noise in 2021.

Stunt charges are issued when a driver exceeds 40 km / h on roads with a speed limit below 80 km / h, or when a driver exceeds 50 km / h on any road with a speed limit above 80 km / h . Each charge comes with an automatic suspension of the road license for 30 days and a 14-day detention of the vehicle.

Police are encouraging residents to file traffic complaints through the Ottawa Police Department’s online reporting tool.

“This information will be used by road workers to track drivers who regularly ignore speed limits to show them how reckless and dangerous their actions are to change their behavior,” police said in a statement on Friday. “Information also allows employees to be strategically deployed in places where data analysis shows the greatest potential for improving safety through implementation.
