  • Bernie Sanders said Senators Joe Manchin and Kirsten Cinema had “sabotaged” Biden’s agenda.

  • Sanders unloaded two of his fellow Democrats in the Senate for opposing parts of Biden’s economic plan.

  • His criticism comes at a time when Democrats are increasingly pessimistic about adopting even parts of Biden’s agenda.

Senator Bernie Sanders unloaded Senators Joe Manchin and Kirsten Cinema on Sunday, calling the centrist Democrat couple by name and arguing that they had “sabotaged” President Joe Biden’s agenda.

“You have two members of the Senate, Senator Manchin and Senator Cinema, who sabotaged what the president is fighting for,” Sanders told NBC’s Chuck Todd in “Meet the Press.”

Todd said “sabotage” was a “strong word” to be used, but Sanders doubled his criticism of his fellow Democrats. Sanders, an independent of Vermont who meets with Democrats in the Senate, is also in the Senate leadership with Manchin.

“You have 48 members of the Senate who wanted to move forward with a program that helps working families that is prepared to face the rich and powerful,” Sanders said. “You have a president who wanted to do this. You had two people who prevented us from doing that.”

Sanders and Manchin have fought in public before, but this last round comes when the Progressive Democrats express growing anger at Manchin and Cinema. The two senators opposed the passage of parts of Biden’s climate and spending plan, once known as “Come Back Better,” into law.

Manchin attacked Sanders in January when the former presidential candidate hinted that the West Virginia Democrat should potentially face a major rival.

“Well, Senator Sanders is not a Democrat,” Manchin said at the time, adding that Sanders’ ideology was “not what I think the majority of Americans are.”

The story continues

It is hoped that the reduced version of the former $ 3.5 trillion proposal may still pass, but Democrats’ time is running out as the midterm elections approach.

Both Manchin and Cinema have repeatedly expressed concern about rising inflation as prices soar to their 40-year worst. Their fears of inflation only added to the skepticism of even small parts of Biden’s plan to become law. As Insider reported earlier, Manchin has also thrown cold water at the universal pre-K and other aspects of the original plan.

The White House has also clashed with Manchin in the past, a move that reportedly led Manchin to effectively kill Build Back Better late last year. Since then, Biden and his team have been careful not to question Manchin’s loyalty in public.

The most recent example of this was last week when Manchin joined Senate Republicans in blocking Democrats from adopting federal protection against abortion into law. Manchin told reporters he supported Rowe’s codification against Wade, but said the Democrats’ proposal went too far. Biden issued a statement attacking Senate Republicans for opposing the bill, but Manchin’s name or even a mention of his opposition was not found.
