Probably a tornado seen east of Ottawa

Western University’s Northern Tornado Project says a groundwater tornado appears to have occurred east of Ottawa during heavy weather Sunday.

Witnesses shared photos and videos with CTV News Ottawa showing a possible tornado south of Kasselman around 4:20 p.m.

Northern Tornadoes Project chief executive Dr. David Sills told CTV News Ottawa that he was continuing with witnesses to confirm details, “but it seems that a tornado of earth rays did occur near Kasselman, Ont.”

The source is a specific type of tornado in which the parent storm does not revolve, says Sils.

“Doppler radar doesn’t help much with detection. Public reports are usually the way we learn about them,” Sils said in an email.

Environment Canada issued a signal of a strong thunderstorm for Ottawa and eastern Ontario on Sunday. Thunderstorms were reported in Ottawa at 4 p.m.

Sils says this will be the first tornado in Ontario in 2022.
